Electronic Arts has laid off between 300 to 400 employees in a recent round of job cuts, leading to two Respawn games – one of which was claimed to be a new Titanfall project – being cancelled. At least 100 staff have been laid off at Respawn with a further 200-300 employees terminated across various departments at EA.
Yesterday, Respawn Entertainment put out a statement announcing that it had “made the decision to step away from two early-stage incubation projects and make some targeted team adjustments across Apex Legends and Star Wars Jedi.” According to Bloomberg, among the two Respawn projects that were scrapped, one was a reported extraction shooter set in the Titanfall universe. The other is speculated to have been connected to Star Wars.
“These decisions aren’t easy, and we are deeply grateful to every teammate affected – their creativity and contributions have helped build Respawn into what it is today,” Respawn’s statement continued. “We’re offering meaningful support to those impacted, including exploring new opportunities within EA.”
An EA spokesperson released a statement saying, “As part of our continued focus on our long-term strategic priorities, we’ve made select changes within our organisation that more effectively aligns teams and allocates resources in service of driving future growth.”
Respawn Entertainment will continue work on new Apex Legends content and a third entry in the Star Wars Jedi series, which was confirmed to be in development by EA back in September 2024.
EA announced in January this year that its shares had declined by 16% – which equates to $6 billion in market value – after reporting that both FC 25 and Dragon Age: The Veilguard failed to meet sales expectations. The fourth Dragon Age game received mostly positive reviews from critics but was met with a divisive reception by players. Only a few months later, the game was included as a free PlayStation Plus title.
