EA States Single-Player Games are “a Really Important Part” of its Portfolio

Electronic Arts (EA) has stated that single-player games are, in fact, a “really important part” of its overall portfolio despite its recent ill-conceived jab at the genre. The publisher seemingly backed away from single-player games at the start of 2010 but has begun to lean back into them with the success of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.

EA has not only begun development on the sequel to Jedi: Fallen Order titled Star Wars Jedi: Survivor but has also expanded its single-player showcase to include Dragon Age: Dreadwolf and a Dead Space remake. This is also in the midst of the recent failed attempt by the company to jump onto a social media meme trend that seemingly criticised players who enjoy single-player games.

The company was asked how single-player titles currently slot into the company’s portfolio during its first quarter earnings call on Tuesday. CEO Andre Wilson responded that “our players have these core motivations” and “the telling stories is really important in the fulfillment of some of those motivations”.

“When we think about our portfolio and we think about building it out, we really think about it on two key vectors. One, how can we tell incredible stories? And two, how can we build tremendous online communities? And then how do we bring those two things together?

So, when you look at our portfolio, what you should be looking for is, how are we doing that? How are we building these worlds and telling these stories? How are we developing global online communities? And how are we bringing those two things together for the fulfilment of motivations?”

Wilson continued to discuss how EA plans to fulfill gamers’ motivations through story-telling in single-player games.

Despite this, EA still has a large stake in online gaming as it makes up roughly three-quarters of their business at the present moment. However, it was recently announced that EA is currently working on a single-player, open-world Black panther game. As mentioned earlier, EA is also currently working on Star Wars Jedi: Survivor as well as a Dead Space remake built from the ground up.
