Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon has stated that he wants to do something different after the release of Mortal Kombat 1, whether that means a new franchise or more unique Mortal Kombat content. Mortal Kombat 1 will be the first game from developer NetherRealm Studios to release directly after another Mortal Kombat – NetherRealm has typically spaced out each release with a new Injustice game over the past decade, though that hasn’t happened this time.
As you can imagine, Ed Boon might be feeling a bit of burnout from two back-to-back Mortal Kombat releases, though the co-creator says that isn’t the case. Speaking in an interview with IGN, Boon said that mixing things up with new modes and features in each Mortal Kombat game kept things “fresh”, though there is a desire to move away from the franchise for now and tackle new ideas.

When speaking about doing something different, Ed Boon stated:
“I absolutely have desire to do something different. Surprisingly, I don’t feel burnout just because we’ve been trying new stuff with each game. Sometimes it’s something as minor as like a side game of Puzzle Kombat, Konquest, all these kind of modes and now, Invasions. So those game features and game modes I think for our studio keep things kind of fresh while we still do the core mechanic of a fighting game in online, single player story, all that stuff.”
Mortal Kombat 1 is being touted as a reboot of the franchise following Liu Kang’s ascension to Fire God in Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath. NetherRealm has released several new trailers over the past few months showcasing Smoke and Rain as well as Reptile, Havik and the rulers of Outworld, empress Sindel and General Shao. We managed to get some early impressions of the game thanks to the pre-order beta – you can read our full thoughts right here.
