Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree Miquella George R.R. Martin

Elden Ring Director Reveals Miquella Was Created by George R.R. Martin

Elden Ring director Hidetaka Miyazaki has spoken a bit more about the involvement of George R.R. Martin in the development process of the game. There has been some debate online for the past few years regarding Martin’s actual contributions to the game’s lore and characters – for the most part, the Game of Thrones author wrote a bit of the worldbuilding and history of the universe – though now we know that Miquella, the central figure of Shadow of the Erdtree, was at least one of his creations.

Speaking to The Verge in a recent interview, Miyazaki revealed that Shadow of the Erdtree‘s focus on Miquella, the demigod brother of Malenia, was “born of the desire to honor George R.R. Martin’s contributions to the game,” somewhat confirming that George R.R. Martin had written Miquella.

When you really analyse the family politics of Elden Ring and its demigods, you definitely get a sense of Martin’s work embedded in the DNA of the game’s characters. This is something that Martin injected into his writing style with the questionable family dynamics in A Song of Ice & Fire and it shows in some of Elden Ring‘s notable figures, particularly Miquella who, as we come to discover in Shadow of the Erdtree, is undoubtedly more Martin than Miyazaki (without spoiling anything).

“[He] gave us all this great mythology to work with,” said Miyazaki in the interview, acknowledging Martin’s contribution to the lore and worldbuilding of Elden Ring.

Unfortunately, it’s never been explicitly stated which aspects of Elden Ring George R.R. Martin was directly involved in but we’re starting to get a sense of what he gave to developer From Software, since Shadow of the Erdtree arguably tells a more straight-forward and personal story of Miquella and his determined pursuit for godhood.

Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree is now available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC. Also check out our guides on how to beat Messmer The Impaler and Rellana, Twin Moon Knight.
