The upcoming Elden Ring DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree, recently received some early impressions from select media outlets who got the opportunity to play around 3 hours of the enormous expansion. Speaking in an interview following the preview event, From Software director Hidetaka Miyazaki said that Shadow of the Erdtree was always planned to be massive and offer an experience for the player “that was going to match that of the base game.” It will take at least 30-40 hours to beat the new content.
At 30-40 hours estimated play time, it makes Shadow of the Erdtree the longest and largest DLC that From Software has ever made. It’s certainly ambitious and according to extremely positive early impressions, it lives up to it.
Speaking to PC Gamer in an interview, Elden Ring director Hidetaka Miyazaki talked in more detail about the DLC’s scope and ambition:
“At the very outset there were a lot of possibilities, but one of the things that was determined very early on was that size. We wanted that sense of scale for this map, because we wanted an experience for the player that was going to match that of the base game. We wanted them to experience that sense of discovery, and that sense of wonder and exploration again. We needed a map that was going to uphold that and bolster that.”
