Elden Ring How to Access Mohgwyn Palace Varre Questline

Elden Ring – How to Access Mohgwyn Palace

Shadow of the Erdtree, the next massive expansion for 2022’s Elden Ring, will require players to have completed some things that you might’ve completely missed on your first playthrough. In order to actually access the DLC, you’ll need to complete a pretty obscure questline involving Varre in order to meet Mohg, the Lord of Blood (and Miquella’s cocoon, the entry point for the DLC). Here’s how to complete Varre’s questline and access Mohgwyn Palace.

Before you start the Varre questline, you’ll need to engage with him at the very first site of grace in Limgrave. He’s standing right next to it on the small cliff overlooking the first Tree Sentinel. Speak with him to exhaust his dialogue then progress the game until you defeat Godrick. The next time your paths cross, you will have initiated his questline that will eventually grant you access to Mohgwyn Palace.

How to Access Mohgwyn Palace in Elden Ring

Here’s a step-by-step guide on what to do in order to access Mohgwyn Palace. It’s as simple (kind of) as completing Varre’s questline.

Elden Ring How to Access Mohgwyn Palace Varre Questline

  • Once you have defeated Godrick in Stormveil Castle, go back to the first Limgrave site of grace and speak to Varre. He will tell you to go to the Roundtable Hold and speak to the Two Fingers.
  • After speaking to the Two Fingers and the Finger Reader in Roundtable Hold (located in the main chamber at the back of the hold), return to the first site of grace to discover that Varre has left you a message: he’s now moved to the Rose Church in Liurnia of the Lakes.
  • In order to find the Rose Church in Liurnia, start from the Academy Gate Town site of grace and travelling directly west. You’ll eventually hit a small island with a ruined church (inside the church is a bloody duelist to kill). Varre can be found right outside the entrance.
  • When you speak to Varre, mention to him that the Two Fingers “didn’t seem right” to progress the quest. He’ll tell you that the Two Fingers are corrupt then give you five Festering Bloody Fingers.
  • At this point, you’ll be required to invade other players but despite being given five fingers, you actually only need to use three. You also don’t need to win each invasion fight, simply invading another player is enough.
  • Once you’ve invaded three players, speak to Varre again and he’ll anoint you a knight of Mohg. For your final task, you’ll be given a white cloth and asked to soak it in maiden’s blood.
  • There are three potential maidens to find throughout The Lands Between:

The first can be found west of Liurnia at the Four Belfries. Grab a key and use it to travel back to the Chapel of Anticipation, the very first area of the game. Defeat the sentry here and go back to the chapel, where you’ll find a dead maiden to soak the white cloth in.

The second maiden can be found in the Church of Inhibition. This is a pretty risky journey as it requires you to travel north and get through a fairly difficult climb towards the church while avoiding Frenzy. Once inside the church at the top, you’ll find the maiden there.

The third and last maiden is Irina, the blind maiden you talk to in the Weeping Peninsula. If you’ve already completed her task of finding her father, she will disappear. However, if you didn’t finish her quest yet, you can return to her and kill her, then soak the white cloth. You only need the blood of one maiden so choose any of the above.

  • Next, return to Varre and he will ask you for your finger. Offer it to him and you’ll receive a few rewards. Most importantly, you get the Pure Blood Knight’s Medal. Using this item will immediately teleport you to Mohgwyn Palace.

Alternatively, you can also progress into the game far enough until you get to the Mountaintop of the Giants. There’s a teleporter to the southwest of Ordina Liturgical Town that will also take you directly to the palace. However, most people prefer to access Mohgwyn Palace as soon as possible in order to do the bird farm exploit. More on that in a later article.

Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree launches on 21 June 2024 for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC. Make sure you also check out the game’s pre-load and file size.
