Developer From Software is gearing up for the launch of Elden Ring Nightreign this week, in which teams of three players have to survive against an onslaught of increasingly tough enemies and bosses within time limits. While it’s quite a departure from the single-player focused Elden Ring, Nightreign promises to have the same amount of care and attention given to it. From Software wants to make sure it gets its first big multiplayer outing right as it’s bracing servers for the influx of players this week.
In a recent interview with GamesRadar, Elden Ring Nightreign director Junya Ishizaki was asked if the team at From Software were ready to beef up the servers for the game’s full release. “There are, of course, some areas to the infrastructure and the network systems that we are looking at again, in terms of Nightreign being a multiplayer-focused title,” said Ishizaki.
“One area, in particular, is each session being roughly 40 minutes or so, 30 to 40-minute sessions, so making sure that the infrastructure is robust enough to support that, at the very least, is something that we’re looking at. But also incorporating safety measures as well,” Ishizaki added.
The goal, according to Ishizaki, is to want players to be able to keep playing despite any potential setbacks. He explained:
“In the worst case, we want players to be able to keep playing, even if there is a connection issue. We don’t want them to just get kicked out. We want them to be able to keep playing in their own world, for players to reconnect. We’re also looking at matchmaking, not just using a password system like in our previous titles, but looking at ways that players can pool and matchmake together in terms of progression and what they have available to them. These are things that are taken for granted in the multiplayer gaming sphere, and so we’re trying to incorporate as many of these as possible and improve our multiplayer game.”
On that note, From Software confirmed that Nightreign will feature a solo mode for instances where connection issues pop up. Understanding that some Elden Ring players will also want to tackle the experience on their own, the mode was added to give solo players seeking a challenge that edge.
Elden Ring Nightreign launches on 30 May 2025 for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC. If you’re picking up the game on PlayStation, check out the download size.
