Prep Work

Romina, Saint of the Bud can be found in the Ancient Ruins of Rauh and requires a bit of navigation and platforming to get to her arena. Before you run into the fight, make sure that you’re prepared with some of these items to make the tough boss a little less frustrating.

  • Preserving Boluses: Romina is all about inflicting Scarlet Rot, so make sure you stock up on Preserving Boluses to remove the ailment if you get struck with it. Your health will be chipped away quickly if you don’t heal.
  • Ailment Talisman: This Talisman can be found in the Abandoned Ailing Village directly north of the Gravesite Plain. It raises the resistance of the last ailment you were inflicted with, which means if you get caught with Scarlet Rot, this Talisman will offer greater protection against it afterwards.
  • Weaknesses: Romina is weak to bleed, frostbite and holy damage, though we’ve found bleed to be the most effective. If you run into this fight with a good bleed build, you should have an easier time.
  • Lord of Blood’s Exultation: For that extra boost in attack power after inflicting Blood Loss, the Lord of Blood’s Exultation is a must-have.

Best Strategies to Defeat Romina

With the prep work done for the fight, get ready to face Romina, Saint of the Bud. She’s one of the last hurdles standing in your way before you can access the final area of the game. Here are some of the best strategies we’ve found to defeat her and how to avoid getting Scarlet Rot:

  • Roll Into Her Attacks: This seems to be the most full-proof strategy to avoid almost all of the DLC bosses’ attacks. Thankfully, her attacks are quite easily telegraphed so you don’t have to worry about getting caught off-guard by sudden sweeps or strikes with little reaction time. Roll into her attacks to avoid the swings and you should be fine.
  • Butterflies: Once in a while, Romina will send out purple butterflies around the arena. Be prepared because these butterflies are about to explode and inflict heavy Scarlet Rot. You have a few seconds to back away from their range before they pop, so make sure you aren’t caught in the crossfire.
  • Rolling Leaps: Romina will frequently turn her centipede-like body into a rolling wheel of death, leaping up to cover great distance. There’s a very small delay before she hits the ground so time your dodge correctly to avoid damage.
  • Second Phase: Her second phase brings out a lot more Scarlet Rot and it lingers around the arena for quite a while, making navigation a little tricky. Getting up close to her also won’t be an option since she’ll likely be shrouded in fogs of Scarlet Rot. The trick here is to bait her away from the rotten fog into a clear area if you’re a melee user. If you’re using ranged attacks, it probably won’t be an issue.
  • Black Knife Tiche: We’ve found Black Knife Tiche to be the best Spirit Ash for this fight due to her ability to proc Blood Loss effectively (as it turns out, Romina is very weak to bleed). Tiche can also successfully dodge most of Romina’s direct attacks, making her a vital Spirit Ash to have for the battle.
  • Summon Dryleaf Dane: You also get Dryleaf Dane as an NPC summon outside the fog gate. Drawing Romina’s aggression is crucial as she’s very good at singling out and aggressively attacking one player, but she loses her groove a bit when faced by more than one opponent.

Once again, stay calm and take the time to read her attacks. Romina is tough but has a few surprisingly generous openings to attack. Make sure you’re equipped with Preserving Boluses and/or gear that grants you good affinity against Scarlet Rot.
