Zenimax Online Studio, the developer behind the long-running The Elder Scrolls Online, says it wants to ‘shake things up’ by ditching the yearly expansion release schedule and bringing more highly-requested variety to the game on a more consistent basis. 2025 marks the first year in which we won’t receive a proper expansion for the MMORPG. Instead, Zenimax plans on providing substantial updates throughout each year, many also including new story content.
In the recent ESO Direct, Zenimax Online studio head Matt Frior talked about changing the direction of The Elder Scrolls Online to allow the devs to experiment with more new and fresh ideas while bringing variety to the experience. “After a long and successful run, it’s time to shake things up in ESO, change the way we deliver content, put more of a focus on testing new ideas, and ensure the game stays fresh and modern for years into the future,” said Frior.
He added:
“We’ve heard your feedback about wanting more variety and to shake things up. We agree, we want to keep telling great stories but also mix in new ideas and gameplay systems, and that’s exactly what we’re gonna do. But we’ll do this in a different cadence, one that allows us the developers to broaden our focus and increase variety. Instead of a single yearly major release, we plan to spend more time delivering an assortment of new content and gameplay systems aimed at enhancing the base game, making everything better for new and returning players, and above all, focusing on experimenting with new and different types of content.”
The recent ESO Direct laid out the studio’s release plans for the next 12 months including substantial seasonal updates with new story content, gear, events, dungeons and much more. The first update will take players to the island of Solstice, off the Southern cost of Tamriel. Since The Elder Scrolls 6 is still scheduled to release sometime within our lifetimes (hopefully), ESO is keeping players occupied and wants to continue doing so for the foreseeable future.
