Epic Games Buys Fall Guys Developer Mediatonic

Epic Games is buying Fall Guys developer Mediatonic including its parent company Tonic Games Group. The Fortnite creator announced the acquisition but did not share the total sum of the buyout in the news. However, this purchase marks one of Epic Game’s higher-profile acquisitions in recent months. This following the previous purchase of Rocket League developer Psyonix.

Nothing much is changing when it comes to Fall Guys at the current state. The game will still remain for sale on Steam, even though Epic Games owns its own dedicated game marketplace

Fall Guys is also headed to both Xbox and Nintendo Switch in the coming weeks ahead. There’s also no plan to make the game free-to-play for any platform. This being something Epic Games likes to do to their titles. However, Epic did state that Fall Guys will come to the Epic Games Store in the future.

The acquisition is quite a strange one for Epic Games in its context. Firstly, Fall Guys is actually developed on the Unity Engine, a rival to Epic Game’s Unreal Engine. In addition, the game bypassed the Epic Games Store at launch in favour of Steam. Still, the game giant clearly has big plans for Mediatonic and its parent company.

The purchase also includes Fortitude Games who are also part of the Tonic Games Group. This means that Epic will own a portion of whatever the studio are currently working on. In a statement, Dave Bailey, CEO and founder of Tonic Games Group said:

“At Tonic Games Group we often say that ‘everyone deserves a game that feels like it was made for them.’ With Epic, we feel like we have found a home that was made for us. They share our mission to build and support games that have a positive impact, empower others and stand the test of time and we couldn’t be more excited to be joining forces with their team.”

Fall Guys has been a massive success since its launch last year. The game released on PS4 and Steam and broke records. It was helped by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic which forced users to stay at home and play the game. Sony also played a major part in the game’s success by providing it for free through its PlayStation Plus service.
