Fallout 4 Next-Gen Update the Good Bad Ugly

Fallout 3 Remastered Gunplay Should Be Like Fallout 4 Says Game’s Designer

Fallout 3 Remastered has taken the title of the video game industry’s worst kept secret after The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered launched earlier this week. The existence of a remastered Fallout 3 was already leaked in Microsoft court documents during a previous case with the FTC, all but confirming that it’s on the way. One of the game’s original designers has some opinions about how the post-apocalyptic remaster should play, arguing that its gunplay in particular should be like Fallout 4.

The leap from Fallout 3 to Fallout 4 was a substantial one, not just upgrading the visuals but also refining its gunplay, combat and overall flow of gameplay to be more reactive, faster-paced and action-heavy. It’s a move that made the fourth game a bit of a divisive one in the fandom, though no one can argue that the gunplay felt pretty great, especially compared to its predecessor.

Fallout 3 designer Bruce Nesmith spoke to VideoGamer recently and presented some ideas about how Fallout 3 Remastered could improve its gameplay, stating:

“What did you see in Fallout 4? That will tell you what they felt was necessary to change from Fallout 3. I know in Fallout 4 there was a lot of work done on the gun combat, because Fallout 3 is the first time they ever tried to do a shooter-style game. And, well, I think the work that was done was amazing.”

“[Fallout 3 combat] didn’t hold up to shooters at the time,” Nesmith added. “Also, it’s an RPG shooter, it’s not a run-and-gun shooter. But a lot of work was done on that for Fallout 4. So I anticipate seeing a lot of that work go into it, assuming they’re doing the same thing.”

Bethesda hasn’t announced Fallout 3 Remastered yet, but we imagine it will be a breath of fresh air for fans of the series who didn’t take kindly to the MMO-focused Fallout 76. Fans speculate that the remaster could arrive in time for the second season of the Amazon television series.
