John Gonzalez, the lead writer for 2010’s critically acclaimed Fallout: New Vegas, has returned to developer Obsidian Entertainment, though he stressed that he’s not working on a sequel to the beloved RPG. Gonzalez’s new job isn’t just as a writer but now as a creative director, though he didn’t share any details on which projects he’s currently working on.
John Gonzalez updated his LinkedIn profile this weekend confirming that he has returned to Obsidian Entertainment after leaving the company back in 2011. Since then, Gonzalez worked on various big projects, namely as a writer on Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, the lead writer on Horizon Zero Dawn and the narrative director of Horizon Forbidden West. It’s unclear what he’s working on next with Obsidian, though many believe that it’s a new IP.
However, Gonzalez was quick to squash dreams of a potential Fallout: New Vegas 2, stating on his profile that his new job is “not FNV2.” We’ve heard plenty of rumours about a possible continuation over the years but sadly, none of them have come true or have ever gotten off the ground. Obsidian currently has its hands full with the upcoming fantasy RPG Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2 – both scheduled to release this year.
Back in November 2022, the game’s director Josh Sawyer said that should a sequel actually happen, it would probably be set in New Orleans or California (which happens to be the setting of the live-action Fallout TV series). He previously stated:
“I haven’t thought about it in quite a while because again, it kind of came into my life and then floated away. In the past, I’ve said you know people have talked about New Orleans. I do think California or the Midwest would also be very interesting. I’m a big believer in finding things that, obviously I have to be passionate about it as a director, but also that the team is really excited about, and also that works within the larger idea of the property.”
