Fan-Made Skyblivion Mod Still Being Worked on Despite Official Oblivion Remaster

Earlier this week, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered leaked way ahead of a reveal via developer Virtuos’ official website. Fans celebrated the arrival of the remaster (which seems more like a complete remake), though this left others wondering what would happen to the ambitious fan-made Skyblivion mod which has been in development for over a decade with the same goal of remaking the classic RPG.

According to Skyblivion project lead Rebelzize, the fan-made mod is still being worked on despite the official Oblivion remaster being announced. Both projects essentially aim to remake the original Oblivion, the only difference being that Skyblivion is being built entirely using assets already available in Skyrim. Meanwhile, Virtuos’ Oblivion Remastered appears to use entirely new assets and models. Skyblivion has been in development for a whopping 13 years, which is commendable considering all the work put into it thus far was from passionate community members instead of paid developers.

Rebelzize commented on Oblivion Remastered on social media, stating:

“The real remake is the friends we made along the way. To be clear this changes nothing for me. This always was a passion project and still is until the end. For the community its a win-win as you get twice the amount of Oblivion this year. All love and no hate towards the people who made the official remaster.”

“Since this got a lot more attention then I expected let me just say I hope you will enjoy either the official or our remake,” said Rebelzize in a follow-up post. “Either way thanks for the support and be kind to one another.”

As of writing, there’s no word on when players can expect to jump into Skyblivion, though the team stated in February this year that was “nearly in a releasable state.”

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered has yet to be announced but its coming to PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.

“Skyblivion is being built entirely using assets already available in Skyrim. Meanwhile, Virtuos’ Oblivion Remastered appears to use entirely new assets and models.”

    This is completely wrong.

Every asset in Skyblivion is completely new. We haven’t seen what the Virtuous remaster will be yet, but since it’s a remaster and not a remake, it’s likely just upscaled versions of the original assets.
