Earlier this week, the full list of nominees were revealed for The Game Awards 2023 and among the celebrations of Baldur’s Gate 3 and Alan Wake 2 landing the most nominations, some players were left scratching their heads at the lack of recognition for Bethesda’s sci-fi RPG, Starfield. Fans have now responded to the news and as it turns out, most of them have taken it surprisingly well.
Starfield launched back in September to a mostly positive reception from critics but a much more divisive reception from players who felt that it under-delivered on what Bethesda Game Studios is capable of. Some also felt like the game was good but it never lived up to the ambitious heights of the developer’s past titles like Skyrim. Over on the Starfield subreddit, fans began responding to the news that Starfield was nominated in just one category, Best RPG, for The Game Awards and missed out on a Game of the Year nod.

“I mean, the game has so much wasted potential, it makes sense not being nominated,” wrote one Reddit user. Another wrote in response to the Game of the Year nominees:
“Starfield doesn’t come close to any of those games. It’s frustratingly uneven, full of half-baked systems and unfulfilling quests. It doesn’t even deliver on the basic ‘awe’ of space travel. If there was a ‘Best game overhauled by mods a year later’ category, Starfield would probably win in 2024.”
“I tried so hard to like Starfield, but it was so damn tedious—I got bored,” said another user. “I was excited, I really was. I loved Skyrim and I’ve played through that game three times. However, this was just too much and uninteresting. The only thing I liked was the space travel and that was extremely limited, not enough to keep me playing.”
Naturally, there’s always two sides to the conversation. More, uh, passionate fans have also spoken out:

Starfield is up for Best RPG at The Game Awards but as most have already suggested, it will probably lose to Baldur’s Gate 3 which is also nominated for Game of the Year. Other Game of the Year nominees include The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Resident Evil 4, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Alan Wake 2.
Starfield is now available for Xbox Series X/S and PC.
