Back in January 2023, the first reports of Far Cry 7 and a potential multiplayer game were leaked, revealing new details about both titles. The multiplayer game, codenamed Project Maverick, was originally intended to be a component of Far Cry 7, though it seems to have evolved into its own standalone project over the years. Now, a new report claims that Ubisoft is having a bit of trouble with the title as it’s reportedly been rebooted in development.
The report comes from Insider Gaming. According to numerous sources close to Project Maverick, the multiplayer Far Cry title was recently rebooted during development. Sources claim that the “writing was on the wall” for months before it finally went back to the drawing board. One of the key tech teams working on Maverick reportedly moved over to focus on the development of Project Blackbird (the codename for Far Cry 7) in late December to “ensure that the project stays on track.”
However, this left Project Maverick’s development team in a bit of a bind. There seemed to be problems during development leading up to the tech team’s shift over to Far Cry 7, which was the straw that broke the camel’s back for the entire multiplayer project. This apparently led to Project Maverick being rebooted, though it’s unclear to what extent.
On the bright side, development on Far Cry 7 appears to be going smoothly. Last month, new details about the game’s story surfaced revealing a family power struggle dynamic at the heart of the narrative, which has since been compared to the hit HBO television series Succession. At the moment, we don’t know who will play the role of the main villain figure in the game – a staple in the Far Cry series, it seems – though earlier reports about Oppenheimer actor Cillian Murphy donning the role were swiftly debunked.
