FCC Reveals Nintendo Switch 2 Upgrades Across Wi-Fi, NFC and Power Usage

The FCC filing has detailed some unannounced features on the Nintendo Switch 2 that are interesting to note. The filing comes as Nintendo is certifying the console in various parts of the world in preparation for the release later this year.

The FCC filing essentially details the hardware and all of its technical specifications so that the console can go through the regulatory process in other regions and get certified. However, for the process to happen, Nintendo has to be completely open and transparent on the technical specifications for the hardware.

As a result, the FCC has listed some specs for the Nintendo Switch 2 which were shared by the company. For starters, NFC support has been confirmed in the right Joy-Con controller. The FCC also revealed an upgraded NFC chip in the Joy-Con which likely means better connection and faster processing.

This NFC confirms that Nintendo plans to support Amiibo figurines on the Nintendo Switch 2 as it has on the original console. At the moment, it isn’t clear if this NFC feature will come with other accessory support.

The filing also confirms that the second USB-C port on the Switch 2 can be used for charging and has the same power input at the bottom port. So users will be able to charge the Nintendo Switch 2 with either the bottom port or top port. However, docking the console will be limited to the bottom port.

There’s also confirmation that the Switch 2 will come with Wi-Fi 6 support with compatibility on 80MHz networks. The certification lists 802.11ax which is an upgrade over the original Switch and its 802.11ac Wi-Fi.

Lastly, the FCC says the Switch 2 Dock has an AC rating of 15V which is the same power input as the original console. However, the listing also says the Switch 2 can use an adapter of up to 20V. This means that overall, the Switch 2 will draw more power. We don’t know if this greater power draw will go towards faster charging or improved performance when docked. It might be used for both.

A previous Nintendo Switch 2 leak claimed that the console would use a more powerful adapter with a greater power draw when docked. The source said this power draw would go towards both charging and increased performance.

That’s all we have for now. As we lead up to the Nintendo Switch 2 reveal next month, we will likely see and hear more about the console through more leaks. Nintendo is expected to host a dedicated Switch 2 Direct on 2 April.
