At E3 2019, the release date for the Final Fantasy 7 Remake was finally announced and afterwards, we got to see some gameplay as well as an awesome trailer, gameplay and even a boss battle. Excitement is high for the remake and we have marked our calendars with a permanent marker for 3 March 2020 when the game releases on PS4. But will we see a Final Fantasy 7 Remake PS5 release as well?

The question is an important one as the spec’s for Sony’s next-gen console was revealed recently and it looks like the PS5 will release sometime next year. Final Fantasy 7 Remake is also set to release next year, at least the first part is, with more to release later on.
A comment made by Square Enix’s president, Yosuke Matsuda, when asked by GameInformer if there will be a next-gen version of the game, tells us that a Final Fantasy 7 Remake coming to next-gen is likely. Mr Matsuda said that:
[perfectpullquote align=”full” bordertop=”false” cite=”” link=”” color=”#33ffe9″ class=”” size=”22″]I believe that our teams have made it so that the game will support both the next generation and the current generation of consoles. I believe it is being developed so that it is going to be playable on both, so I’m not really concerned about that and I believe that the fans are also going to be able to enjoy it on both, including the next-generation of consoles.[/perfectpullquote]
The only reason this isn’t “confirmed” is that Mr Matsuda uses the world “believe” throughout his statement. Keep in mind that with PS5 backward compatibility, his statement could also mean that the game will be playable on the next-gen console and might not have a specific release for the PS5. It does make sense that the game will go cross-gen since the PS5 could very likely release in the same year as the remake.
