Rumours about a potential remake of Final Fantasy 9 have been swirling around online for years at this point with no official announcement from Square Enix in sight. A new report from a reliable leaker claims that we might not see the anticipated remake until at least 2026 as major releases from Square Enix will be sparse this year.
According to leaker NateTheHate, who has been pretty on-the-ball lately regarding accurate leaks and insider information, when pressed by a user about the status of the rumoured Final Fantasy 9 and Final Fantasy Tactics remakes, he stated that both games are still in active development. However, the Final Fantasy 9 remake isn’t expected to release in 2025 and might only arrive in 2026.
We’ve reported quite a bit on the Final Fantasy 9 remake, going as far back as 2022 following the infamous NVIDIA GeForce leak (which turned out to be mostly true). Square Enix producer Yoshi-P even chipped in on a potential remake of the game, stating that a full remake on the scale of Final Fantasy VII would be needed to do it justice. Final Fantasy 9 is a big game in terms of scope, storytelling and moving parts – maybe even moreso than Final Fantasy VII – so it would make sense for a multi-game remake.
However, everything we’ve heard about the game so far – if the reports turns out to be accurate – suggests that it will be one game.
Unfortunately, Square Enix’s plans for full remakes in the Final Fantasy franchise might stop there. Back in May 2024, leaker Midori claimed that there was no remake of Final Fantasy X in development. The game, as well as its sequel, were bundled together with the Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remastered package which is still good enough for most modern gamers to enjoy. It might be years until we also see a completely new entry in the mainline franchise.
