Final Fantasy Composer Nobuo Uematsu is Stepping Back From Video Games

Legendary Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu has announced that he will be stepping back from composing for video games but not completely retiring. The news follows misleading reports that he was retiring when in reality, Uemastu stated that he was simply planning on spending less time composing complete soundtracks for games to focus on making the music he wants to make.

Nobuo Uematsu, who is best known for composing the iconic scores for several Final Fantasy games as well as the recent Fantasian: Neo Dimension, has announced that he’ll be cutting back on his video game music work to focus on making the music he wants to make. While this isn’t retirement, Uematsu says he’ll still compose for video games, though it won’t be complete soundtracks but rather theme songs. Uematsu added that composing scores is a long process and he would like to step away from that process.

His full statement posted on X reads:

“Wait, wait, wait! Everybody calm down! There seems to be some misunderstanding, but I’m not retiring from video game music work! I’m going to cut back a bit on my video game music work because I want to have more time to make the music I want to make. It would be difficult for me to take on the entire soundtrack of a video game because the time commitment for composing would be too long, but I would like to continue to work on jobs such as one theme song.”

In related Final Fantasy news, Square Enix says both Final Fantasy XVI and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth failed to meet expectations, likely due to the games being PS5 exclusives. The former is already available on PC with work underway for an Xbox version while there’s no word on when the latter will get a multiplatform release.
