Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Announced for 2023, The Sequel to Remake

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth has officially been announced and it’s the long-awaited sequel to Final Fantasy VII Remake. Square Enix confirmed the exciting news via the recent Final Fantasy VII 25th Anniversary event. Rebirth was also confirmed to be a PS5 exclusive when it launches in winter 2023, as revealed by the first teaser trailer.

Square Enix packed a few surprise announcements at the recent Final Fantasy VII 25th Anniversary broadcast, and despite some technical issues, managed to still deliver what fans have been waiting for. Alongside a full remake of the beloved Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core (which arrives later this year), we’re also getting the anticipated sequel to Final Fantasy VII Remake next year in the form of Rebirth.

Like its predecessor, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will launch exclusively on PS5, though this might be a timed exclusivity situation as Remake was also only exclusive to PS4 for a limited time before finding its way to other platforms a couple of years later.

In addition to Square Enix confirming the existence of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the company also revealed that the ambitious remake project of Final Fantasy VII will span a total of three games. The project’s creative director Tetsuya Nomura confirmed that he was already well in development of the third and final entry.

Next year will see the release of two major Final Fantasy titles now: Rebirth and Final Fantasy XVI, both launching presumably a few months apart from each other.

In the teaser trailer, we get a brief glimpse of Cloud and Sephiroth as well as the overworld of the original game beautifully recreated and upscaled. It’s currently unknown how much of the original game Rebirth will “adapt” and reimagine, but we’ll have to wait for more news to arrive in the coming months.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is currently in development for PS5 and launches in 2023. Check out the announcement trailer below.
