Square Enix might’ve changed course on releasing future AAA games on multiple platforms but Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth are not in active development for Xbox at the moment, according to one report. However, the source reiterates that it’s possible Square Enix might eventually release the ambitious remakes on Xbox following the release of the unnamed third and final project in the trilogy.
The report originates from Alex Donaldson, the owner of RPG Site and assistant editor of VG247. Speaking on Icon Era, Donaldson wrote a lengthy response about Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth and whether or not the titles would ever come to Xbox. According to Donaldson, the ports aren’t in active development at the moment at Square Enix. Donaldson says PlayStation remains a priority for the remake trilogy, though there’s a chance all three games will eventually get Xbox or Switch 2 versions down the line.
He stated:
“I’ll go ahead and just outright say that to my knowledge, there is presently no active development on an Xbox version of Remake or Rebirth. They will obviously eventually do it. But as far as being in active port development now, to my understanding, which I am quite confident in, they are not. People can believe that or not, obviously, but I’d argue I’m pretty trustworthy/on the money with SEJ stuff.”
Speaking on the recent Final Fantasy XVI Xbox port rumours, Donaldson also addressed those. “16 I think is more obvious and clear-cut… you only need to look at Yoshida’s comments over the last six or so months. It’s clear that will happen sooner rather than later.”
We recommend taking all of this information with a pinch of salt for now until we get confirmations down the road from Square Enix. However, it’s a pretty good guess that we’d only see Xbox versions of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy after the third entry is released – perhaps launched as a complete collection of some type.
