Square Enix has confirmed that the script for Final Fantasy VII Remake part 3, the third and last entry in the ambitious multi-game remake of Final Fantasy VII, is complete as the game enters full production. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth director Naoki Hamaguchi will be returning to direct the third entry alongside long-running series producer Yoshinori Kitase, who also directed the original 1997 classic.
Speaking at G-CON 2024 in Korea, Hamaguchi and Kitase confirmed that the script for Final Fantasy VII Remake part 3 is complete and the game has now entered full production, though the pair stopped short of mentioning any juicier details or when we can expect it to arrive. Kitase did give us a few small hints about what players can expect, though. “Final Fantasy VII Rebirth provided a vast map, but in the third game, the Highwind (airship) will appear, so we need to let you experience the world from a higher perspective,” said Kitase.
“We won’t cheat with the airship system, but challenge it head-on so that players can freely fly around the map,” he added.
It sounds like players might be able to explore the overworld by air with the Highwind, similar to the original game. However, in the original, the Highwind acted as a means of faster travel to various locations already visited in the past. It’s possible that the world map of Rebirth will once again be featured in the upcoming untitled project (as many key events take place in places we’ve already visited). We’ll probably know more details closer to the time.
Previous reports suggest that the third untitled game in the Remake trilogy could switch to Unreal Engine 5. The previous two entries were both built in Unreal Engine 4, though it seems like Square Enix will finally make the jump to the newer iteration of Epic’s popular game engine for the next entry.
