Final Fantasy XIV director Naoki Yoshida says Square Enix currently has no plans to make the popular MMO free-to-play. A bulky free trial is already available for players to try out, allowing them to climb to level 70 as well as experience the Stormblood expansion. Despite this massive offering of content in the free trial, Square Enix won’t be making the entire game free-to-play anytime soon.
Speaking to Eurogamer in a recent interview, Yoshida talked about Final Fantasy XIV‘s success and why there’s currently no plans at Square Enix to shift the MMO to a free-to-play model. A lot of the focus seems to be on offering players more content in the free trial instead, though expansions beyond Stormblood will still have to be purchased.

In the Eurogamer interview, Yoshida stated:
“I believe the free trial will continue to be expanded, but we have no plans of making the client itself free at the moment. Since a huge amount of time and money has been invested in the expansion packages, the revenue from sales of the expansion package itself is still very important in order to continue to make expansions on this scale. We would like to constantly aim for the best on the business side as well to continue making a lot of content to be enjoyed.”
Yoshida added that the team isn’t moving on from Final Fantasy XIV to work on anything new. “We don’t have plans to move on to a new game as that would be something even more difficult than having the realm be ‘reborn’,” said Yoshida. “That might change if I am hit with some kind of inspiration though.”
Yoshida and his team at Creative Business Unit III also developed this year’s single-player action-RPG, Final Fantasy XVI, which recently confirmed a PC version alongside two DLC expansions currently in development for the game. Despite selling 3 million copies in one week, making it the highest-selling PS5 exclusive to date, Square Enix said it failed to meet expectations.
Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is currently available for PS4, PS5 and PC.
