Final Fantasy XVI Announcement Set For PS5 Showcase Event – Rumour

Square Enix is set to announce Final Fantasy XVI this week during the PS5 showcase event on 16 September 2020. The game was first rumoured to make an appearance during the June “Future of Gaming” showcase alongside Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Ratchet and Clank: A Rift Apart and more. However, Square Enix instead announced Project Athia, a new open-world RPG from the makers of FFXV.

The Final Fantasy XVI announcement comes after multiple rumours and leaks appeared online. In August, fans discovered a dormant official “Final Fantasy XVI” twitter account registered to Square Enix. The account is currently private with no images or tweets visible to the public.

Brand manager Shinji Hashimoto put out a tweet showing his excitement for the upcoming showcase event. However, he quickly deleted it. Rumours claim Shinji Hashimoto is currently working on Final Fantasy 16. Rumours also claim that the game is a PS5 timed exclusive similar to FF7 Remake.

While none of the above is actual evidence the game exists, FFXVI is another of 2020’s worst-kept secrets. Sony and Square Enix have had a long-time relationship and the company has played host to mostly all of the game announcements in the past. It has also been a while since Final Fantasy XV released meaning a sequel is long overdue. Stay tuned this week for more from the PS5 showcase. Find out what time you can watch the event and where it is happening here.
