Final Fantasy XVI, the upcoming JRPG from Square Enix and Creative Business Unit III, will seemingly feature more than one playable character. The anticipated next entry in the long-running Final Fantasy series will make a few changes to the formula. One of them, though not necessarily new to the franchise, might involve players taking on another role besides the next game’s protagonist, Clive Rosfield.
Final Fantasy XVI creative director Kazutoyo Maehiro recently spoke to Japanese outlet Game Watch, plainly stating that there’ll be more than one playable character in the game. “In the early stages, I also control characters other than Clive.” The use of multiple “characters” here is interesting as it suggests that we’ll be able to play as more than one additional character.

However, we also have no idea how much we’ll actually be able to play as different characters. These could simply be smaller sections where we control other playable characters for a short amount of time, while the vast majority of the game will still revolve around us controlling Clive. Previous games in the series allowed players to control other characters through its party system, ensuring that we had much more agency with them.
We’ll surely know more information in the coming months as, according to Square Enix, Final Fantasy XVI has entered the final stretch of development ahead of its release in summer 2023.
In related news, Square Enix also confirmed that the game will receive a playable demo before release, though didn’t mention when we can expect it. PlayStation also revealed that it will remain a PS5 exclusive for only six months before it inevitably releases on other platforms.
Final Fantasy XVI is currently in development for PS5 and is expected to release in summer 2023.
