Final Fantasy XVI is under a month away from release and it will be exclusive to PS5, meaning last-gen console owners will unfortunately be left out. Judging by the impressive gameplay and trailers released thus far, it makes sense why the game’s development was focused on PS5 only. According to Square Enix, there were initial plans to release a PS4 port of the game in the early stages of development but that was later scrapped.
Speaking in a recent interview with Final Fantasy Union, producer Naoki “Yoshi-P” Yoshida stated that Final Fantasy XVI was a cross-gen title at first before it shifted it’s focus to PS5. The team decided to ditch the old hardware because it would simply take too much time to work on it.

When pressed about a potential PS4 port, Yoshida stated:
“We originally had a plan to possibly release the game on the PlayStation 4. During development, we realized that, in order to get it to a level that we were gonna be proud of, we would have needed at least one or two more years of development to do that. And so I had to make a decision at that time. It’s like, we don’t want to extend it that long. Let’s go PS5 only.”
This could be a sign that companies are slowly starting to distance themselves from last-gen consoles. Recent releases like the Dead Space remake, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and Forspoken all released on current-gen consoles only. This was bound to happen and it looks like we’ve finally reached that point in the generation where cuts need to be made in order to smoothen the development of new titles.
Sony and Microsoft both championed releasing cross-gen exclusive games like God of War Ragnarok and Halo Infinite, respectively, but upcoming exclusives from the companies like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Starfield will also ditch the old hardware.
Final Fantasy XVI releases on 22 June 2023 for PS5.
