State of Play Leaked Announcements Final Fantasy XVI

Final Fantasy XVI PS5 DualSense Features Detailed

Square Enix has detailed the PS5 DualSense controller features coming to Final Fantasy XVI following the announcement that the action RPG went gold. The main bulk of the game’s development is now complete over two months before its June release date.

Speaking in a recent PlayStation Blog post, Final Fantasy XVI director Hiroshi Takai spoke about how the game utilises the DualSense’s haptic feedback and adaptive triggers during combat and exploration. Key points such as opening heavy doors create equally heavy resistance on the triggers as well as riding chocobos, offering a realistic feeling of traversal. This will also tie into combat and cutscenes which will offer players feedback through subtle vibrations.

Takai’s full explanation for how the DualSense features will work in Final Fantasy XVI reads:

“There are certain sections where the player will have to open heavy doors or lift up portcullises, and we use the adaptive triggers there to put across that feeling of effort and resistance. They’re also used when riding chocobos. The haptic feedback can produce extremely subtle vibrations, which we use to create a heightened feeling of presence in cutscenes. We converted the sound effects used in each scene into haptic data, which let us portray details that we’ve never been able to before, like the movements of the air.”

Final Fantasy XVI is one of the most anticipated major releases of the year. The sixteenth mainline instalment in Square Enix’s long-running RPG series, Final Fantasy XVI will exchange the series’ staple turn-based combat for real-time action similar to Devil May Cry. It won’t feature an open world this time but includes large, explorable zones for players to traverse. The story will largely revolve around warring kingdoms and summons (or Eikons as they’re known in this game) and their massive, kaiju-sized clashes.

Final Fantasy XVI launches on 22 June 2023 for PS5.
