Final Fantasy XVI Sales Were ‘Extremely Strong’ Says Square Enix

Contrary to popular belief, Square Enix seems to be very happy with the initial sales for its latest action-RPG, Final Fantasy XVI. The company recently addressed the rumours that it wasn’t happy with the game’s sales performance since launch, which sold around 3 million copies in its first week – a massive achievement considering that it’s only available on PS5. However, the publisher says the game’s sales were “extremely strong” and it’s currently exploring “a wide range of initiatives to encourage even more people to play the game.”

In a recent statement issued to IGN, Square Enix said that Final Fantasy XVI sold very well when considering the PS5 install base. To show how impressive 3 million copies sold in one week is, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, one of PlayStation’s most beloved IPs and biggest games, only launched to 2.7 million copies sold in its first week on PS4.

Square Enix’s statement on Final Fantasy XVI‘s sales reads:

“With 38 million PS5 consoles shipped globally (as of March 31, 2023), sales of Final Fantasy 16 surpassed three million units worldwide several days after its release on June 22, 2023. Taking into consideration the sales figures of the acclaimed Final Fantasy 7 Remake and the difference in size of the install base of the PlayStation 4 at the time of this title’s release, we can see that the attach rate of Final Fantasy 16 is considerably high, given the PS5 install base.”

“Square Enix considers the initial sales results of Final Fantasy 16 to be extremely strong, and we will continue to carry out a wide range of initiatives to encourage even more people to play the game,” the publisher added.

IGN’s sources claimed that the game’s sales slowed considerably since launch but it wasn’t the disaster that several outlets initially reported it to be. We’ll be able to properly gauge its lifetime sales in a few years once more players acquire PS5 consoles or when the game releases on other platforms.

Final Fantasy XVI is currently available on PS5.
