Square Enix debuted the launch trailer for its upcoming action-RPG, Final Fantasy XVI, during last night’s PlayStation Showcase event. The trailer, titled ‘Salvation’, is a spectacular ride in its own right, showing off some incredibly epic cutscenes mixed with fast-paced action-centric gameplay and a closer look at the narrative’s various conflicts. The game is set to launch next month exclusively for PS5.
The ‘Salvation’ trailer for Final Fantasy XVI gives players a taste of what’s to come in the story and gameplay departments. More importantly, it gives us a solid look at the massive scale of its Eikon battles, which pits the franchise’s summons against each other via the game’s Dominants in epic, destructive clashes. Thankfully, the wait isn’t long as the game is on track to release in under a month.

The official story description for Final Fantasy XVI provided by Square Enix reads:
“The sun is setting upon the land of Valisthea. For centuries, people have flocked to her Mothercrystals to partake of their blessing—the abundant aether that fuels the magicks they rely upon in their everyday lives. As the aether begins to fade and the lifeless deadlands spread ever further, so too does the struggle for possession of the final flickers of the Mothers’ light grow ever more fierce. Yet amidst the gathering storm, there are those who believe that the legacy of the crystals has shaped mankind’s destiny for long enough.”
Final Fantasy XVI is taking a more action-heavy approach to its combat than any other game in the series. This has proven to be a bit divisive for long-time fans of the franchise usually accustomed to the staple turn-based combat but first impressions and previews so far have been largely positive. Many outlets have also praised its more mature storytelling and themes, which some have compared to Game of Thrones.
Final Fantasy XVI launches on 22 June 2023 for PS5. Check out the awesome launch trailer below:
