A new slate of games will be arriving today on PlayStation Plus Extra and Deluxe, featuring critically acclaimed hits like It Takes Two, Undertale and more. While it’s not as big of an offering as past months, there’s something here for everyone. We’ll be going through five of the best games that you can play in the July 2023 catalogue, as long as you’re subscribed to the service.
A quick honourable mention goes out to the classic post-apocalyptic vehicular combat games, Twisted Metal and Twisted Metal 2, which will both be available to PlayStation Plus Deluxe subscribers as part of the classics catalogue. The gameplay hasn’t aged very well but it still retains its awesome, oddball sense of dark humour that’s worth experiencing.

Five Best PlayStation Plus Games to Play in July 2023
It Takes Two
Winner of 2021’s Game of the Year award, Hazelight Studios’ It Takes Two is a fine example of co-op gameplay done right and for the benefit of its excellent story and characters. Similar to the developer’s past game A Way Out, each player controls one of two central characters as they platform, solve puzzles and experience a superb narrative about mending bonds during a failing marriage. It Takes Two includes a Friend Pass which allows users to invite another player to join them in the game even without owning it.
Undertale
If you haven’t heard of or played Undertale yet, you might be in for one of the most unique games you’ll ever play. Undertale is a 2D RPG created by Toby Fox that follows a child who has fallen into the Underground, a large section of the Earth populated by mysterious people and beings. Journey back to the surface as you fight various monsters along the way and unravel its insane plot. That’s all we’ll say because you really need to play Undertale knowing as little as possible.
The Ascent
The Ascent is a cyberpunk-themed co-op action-RPG from Swedish indie studio Neon Giant. Players assume control of a worker who has been enslaved by the powerful megacorporation called “The Ascent Group.” Your role is to ultimately stop other factions from seizing control of the underworld as you make friends and rivals along the way. While it’s not the most inventive shooter you’ll play, it’s a fantastic co-op game that’s worth enjoying with a friend.
Melty Blood: Type Lumina
Fighting game fans can look forward to playing Melty Blood: Type Lumina, the fifth entry in the long-running Melty Blood series and an underappreciated gem in the genre. Thanks to its stylish anime aesthetic, accessible gameplay and inventive new combat mechanics, Melty Blood: Type Lumina manages to stand out in the fighting game market and carve a name for itself – so much so that it’s now in regular rotation at the biggest fighting game tournament in the world, EVO.
Dysmantle
If you’re tired of post-apocalyptic zombie games and want something unique in the genre, look no further than Dysmantle. The game blends survival with RPG elements to create a pretty original experience. Players can construct and practically tear down and break almost every object they encounter in the open-world, giving players endless possibilities and agency. It’s not an easy game but it’s one that rewards the patient and observant.
