Dota 2 is no doubt one of the biggest esports titles (or arguably the biggest) ever and the game was released all the way back in July 2013. However, there was an open beta period of two years prior to the official release and in August 2011, we saw the first The International take place. Now, more than nine years later, five billion dota 2 matches have been played.

Yes, you’ve read that correctly, over 5,000,000,000 Dota 2 matches have been played. This is according to DotaBuff and you can view the recorded match details here. This is an astounding number, to say the least. The game with the Match ID 5000000000 was an all-pick, ranked game in the South East Asia region, which ended after nearly 50 minutes.
The match itself isn’t very interesting, but the mammoth milestone definitely is. Keep in mind that this was roughly 20 hours ago (at the time of writing) so the total Dota 2 matches are obviously tens of thousands higher right now. This probably also doesn’t include internal testing Valve did before the game’s open beta back in 2011.
Check out the first recorded match via DotaBuff here if you are interested in that kind of thing.
At the time of writing, Valve has not mentioned that over five billion Dota 2 matches have been played on their official social media accounts, but maybe, we will hear something from the developer soon.
