Forspoken, the upcoming open-world RPG from Luminous Productions and publisher Square Enix, has received 10 minutes of brand new exploration and combat gameplay and it’s a significant step up from what we’ve seen in the past. We get a good look at protagonist Frey’s assortment of spells and offensive magic as well as various biomes present in the world of Athia.
The gameplay makes a very compelling argument for itself, dialing down some of the more annoying grievances that fans felt with previous trailers – namely Frey’s awkward dialogue. However, the meat of the gameplay revolves around introducing players to some of the combat elements and the vastness of the magical open-world.

Frey uses an arsenal of deadly offensive and defensive magical spells in combat, allowing her to string together elemental attacks that combine fire, ice, water, lightning and more. The particle effects, in particular, are very impressive and it seems to run and flow smoothly in-engine.
Parkour is Frey’s primary means of traversing the open-world, using lift points to latch onto cliff sides in order to propel her further distances. Scattered around each biome are key points of interest, usually highlighted by finding temples and totems (similar to what we’ve seen in Ubisoft’s Immortals Fenyx Rising). Exploration is punctuated by enemies of various difficulty and spectacle littered around the environments.
Forspoken may have had a rocky start with its marketing, but this latest trailer promises a more diverse and busy open-world with a lot to do, see and find. The writing still leaves a bit to be desired, but overall, this latest gameplay drop from Square Enix presents Forspoken in a much better light. Hopefully it still has a few tricks up its sleeve when it releases early next year.
Forspoken releases on 24 January 2023 for PS5 and PC. Check out the extended gameplay footage below.
