If Square Enix can get Final Fantasy XVI out this year, it’s possible that Forspoken could get delayed again. This is according to a recent report by XboxEra’s Nick Baker, who states that it’s entirely possible for FFXVI to release this year, but it could mean bad news for Forspoken which had already gone through a major delay.
Speaking on the latest XboxEra podcast episode, Baker talked a bit about the possibility of Square Enix getting Final Fantasy XVI out this year – a move that wouldn’t be too surprising considering that game director Naoki Yoshida previously claimed that the anticipated JRPG would only get a new trailer once the game was close to completion.
Yoshida also recently revealed that Final Fantasy XVI entered its final stages of development, meaning we’ll likely see something from the game in the coming months.
However, according to Baker, this could mean that Forspoken would get delayed yet again:
“If Square can get Final Fantasy out the door this year, if they think they can, apparently they will delay Forspoken again. If they think they can get Final Fantasy 16 out this year.”
Forspoken is another major Square Enix title launching in the second half of 2022. While Final Fantasy XVI is the bigger title, it doesn’t have a concrete release date or window yet. Naturally, Square Enix might prioritise the release of a AAA Final Fantasy game over Forspoken, which already faced a setback in development when it was delayed out of the first half of the year.
As with all rumours and reports, take this with a grain of salt. It sounds like Baker could simply be speculating, but it makes sense. On the other hand, fans are wondering if it’s possible that Square Enix will stick to its schedule and release both games in 2022. It’s not out of the question, though we’d rather have Final Fantasy XVI first, to be completely honest.
Forspoken is set to release on 11 October 2022 for PS5 and PC. Final Fantasy XVI is without a release date yet.
