South Africa is getting its own Fortnite servers. According to a new report from HYPEX, Epic Games is currently implementing local servers for Fortnite, and they are based in Cape Town.
Little is known about these local Fortnite servers at this time. The account that reported on the news simply included South Africa on the list alongside other regions where new servers are being established. These other regions include Mexico, based in Mexico City, and Indonesia, based in Jakarta.
It makes sense for Epic Games to roll out Fortnite servers in South Africa given how popular the game is locally. These servers would not only direct local matches but also help with most of the African matchmaking in the region.
The implementation of local servers means that players will be able to enjoy low-ping games as well as matchmake with fellow South Africans when playing in certain lobbies. While other big multiplayer games such as Battlefield and Call of Duty have local servers, these games often struggle to keep servers at capacity. So much so that EA even went as far as to turn off the local Battlefield servers due to the lack of players.
I don’t think Fortnite will have this issue, however. Given the game’s widespread player base and multiple platforms, if there was ever a game that really needed local servers, it is Fortnite.
I have reached out to Epic Games for an update on these South African Fortnite servers. Once I hear back, I will share an update. I will also keep an eye open for any updates locally.
