From Software says the size of Elden Ring is “really the limit” for the developer, suggesting that fans shouldn’t expect future games from the studio to be as big as Elden Ring. The open-world RPG launched back in 2022 and it’s widely considered From Software’s best game, winning multiple game of the year awards. However, director Hidetaka Miyazaki says players shouldn’t expect the studio to make another game as big as Elden Ring in the future.
Speaking to The Guardian in a recent interview, game director Hidetaka Miyazaki says Elden Ring was the limit for From Software in terms of scope and size. Future games from the studio likely won’t be as large as Elden Ring. “Budgets, scale, scope, everything has grown to a point where room for failure isn’t tolerated as much as I think it was in the past,” he began.
Miyazaki continued:
“From Software has its own way of hedging risks, so to speak, in that most of our projects have a partner who is financing the project…From a business management perspective, we’re not betting everything on any single project… Before and after Elden Ring, there’s going to be a clear difference. You could see that in Armored Core VI, I would say. Where From Software is right now, in terms of scale, I would say Elden Ring is really the limit. We’ve tapped every resource and talent that we have access to. Scaling it even bigger, I’d have my concerns.”
“Perhaps having multiple projects is the next stage, where some of the younger talent can have the opportunity to manage and direct game design for a smaller project,” he added, suggesting that we’ll likely see smaller projects come out of From Software in the future that aren’t directed or helmed by Miyazaki.
