The future of the Baldur’s Gate franchise will be revealed by Hasbro very soon. Fans who jumped into the franchise with the recent critically acclaimed Baldur’s Gate 3 from Larian Studios might be itching to see what’s in store for the series next. It seems like we won’t have to wait too long to find out the answer, with many hoping that there are plans in place to continue the series.
Speaking to IGN at this week’s Game Developers Conference, Hasbro digital games SVP Dan Ayoub said that there are more plans for Baldur’s Gate with a lot of interest in the potential of the franchise. “We’re kind of working out our plans for the future and what we’re going to be doing with that. And actually, in pretty short order, we’re going to have some stuff to talk about around that,” he said.
Last November, Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks said that there were also plans to continue developing more Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons and Dragons video games. Given the success of Baldur’s Gate 3, which is currently one of the highest-rated games of the decade and won Game of the Year back in 2023, it makes sense that Hasbro would want to double down on it.
Unfortunately, if a Baldur’s Gate 4 were to happen, it wouldn’t come from Larian Studios. The developer confirmed that it’s working on new IPs instead of the Baldur’s Gate franchise for its next projects. The first two games in the franchise were developed by BioWare, which recently released Dragon Age: The Veilguard to a mixed reception. It’s highly unlikely that the Baldur’s Gate IP would find its way back to BioWare anytime soon, leaving the door open for any capable studio to continue the franchise.
Ayoub didn’t mention exactly when Hasbro will reveal its plans, though we’ll cover it as soon as it happens.
