Game of Thrones Movie Reportedly in Development

A Game of Thrones movie is reportedly in very early development at Warner Bros. The critically acclaimed and beloved HBO series based on the books by George R.R. Martin might’ve ended on a sour note with its final season but it seems like some of that goodwill has been won back with the 2022 spin-off show, House of the Dragon. According to a new report, Warner Bros. wants to continue growing the franchise outside of television.

The Hollywood Reporter reported that Warner Bros. had been “quietly” working on a Game of Thrones movie, though it’s still in early development as no casting or creatives have been attached to the project yet. It’s unclear what the movie will cover either, as some suspect that it could readapt the first book in Martin’s A Song of Ice & Fire or tell a completely different story removed from the HBO series.

Warner Bros. is still riding off of the success of HBO’s Game of Thrones, despite an eighth and final season that was received poorly by audiences and critics. We’re two seasons deep into the spin-off show, House of the Dragon, which focuses on the Targaryen dynasty in Westeros hundreds of years before Daenerys was born. A third season will begin filming in 2025, set for release in 2026.

Meanwhile, another spin-off series called A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is also in the works. Set 89 years before the events of Game of Thrones, the story will follow a knight named Ser Duncan The Tall and his squire, Aegon “Egg” Targaryen. The synopsis reads:

“A century before the events of Game of Thrones, two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros… a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.”

Unfortunately, the planned Jon Snow spin-off series has apparently been shelved at Warner Bros. Actor Kit Harington confirmed this much back in April this year.
