HBO has dropped a brand new Game of Thrones season 8 teaser trailer and it’s chilling (pun intended). This will be the final season of the popular show based on the books by George R.R. Martin and the hype has reached insane new levels.

The teaser trailer for Game of Thrones season 8 is called Dragonstone and has a very simple description:

Fire and ice. The final season of Game of Thrones begins this April. #GoTS8

The teaser is literally chilling, starting off with everything being covered by a layer of ice. First, we’re shown a wolf (Stark) being engulfed by the ice. Then, the frozen mist swallows a dragon (Targaryen). The environment then shifts to fire, with a lion (Lannister) shown glowing in the flames. The fire and ice then meet in a dramatic clash.

The first obvious thing to point out is that the Stark and Targaryen houses’ symbols are engulfed by ice, where the Lannister’s lion is ablaze. A cryptic clue in the Game of Throne season 8 teaser trailer is the point at which the fire and ice meet – it seems to be forming Dragonglass (or obsidian). Dragonglass, along with Valyrian steel, are the only known substances that can kill White Walkers. This could be symbolic of fire (Daenerys) and ice (Jon Snow) having to work together to defeat the Night King and his White Walkers.

Another critical clue in the teaser for Game of Thrones season 8 is that the fire and ice are moving across a map of Westeros. The ice is coming from the North, which makes sense because at the end of season 7 we saw the Night King and his White Walker army – which includes one of Daenerys’s dragons – breaking through the Wall and moving towards the South. What’s interesting is that the ice doesn’t reach King’s Landing. Instead, fire bursts out in different parts of Cersei’s kingdom. This could symbolize the ultimate conflict between Cersei and Daenerys, with the fire perhaps suggesting that Daenerys and her remaining two dragons reclaiming King’s Landing and possibly taking the Iron Throne.

Game of Thrones season 8 will be released in April 2019. The final season will have only 6 episodes, making it the shortest Game of Thrones season of the series. Seasons 1 to 6 each had 10 episodes, and season 7 of Game of Thrones had 7 episodes. However, don’t despair – Game of Thrones season 8 might not have so many episodes, but they’ll be the longest episodes in the show’s history.
