GameStop Replaces Switch 2 Consoles Damaged By Rogue Stapler Employee

In the U.S., getting hold of a Nintendo Switch 2 is already quite a chore. The launch events saw hundreds, if not thousands, of people line up for a chance to buy one and pick up their pre-order because stock replenishments aren’t scheduled for a while.

Now imagine paying for your Nintendo Switch 2 console back in April, waiting until 5 June to get it, and you open the box and it is damaged? Well, that’s what has been happening to a few GameStop customers who went to collect their consoles, only to discover that some employee has stapled a receipt to the front of it and at the same time, stapled the actual console itself.

This was an “isolated” scenario at least. Two customers had to deal with damaged consoles in the NY area due to the GameStop store stapling a receipt to the front of the box which then penetrated the cardboard and went into the Switch 2’s display.

If you have watched my Switch 2 console unboxing, you’ll see that the device is placed on the left-hand side of the box. The exact position where the receipt was stuck to. All this makes me wonder; how hard did the GameStop employee slam that stapler down to penetrate so deep into the box though?

But the damage was pretty intense. A photo shared by the customer shows the box and the actual display with two puncture holes in it. I am not sure if these two dots are actual damaged glass or the “included protective film”.

Regardless, the customer got two new console replacements. At first, the store in question told him he would have to wait three months for new stock to arrive but after the story went viral, they seemingly backtracked and made a plan for him. He is now enjoying his staple-hole-free Switch 2 console.

GameStop has since responded to the drama with the typical humour we’d expect from the brand. The account shared a video saying that all staplers have since been confiscated from the store.

At least the South African launch event went off without a hitch. The celebrations took place at the Sandton City Nintendo Branded store on Wednesday evening ahead of the Switch 2’s local launch. The event saw a few hundred people line up for their order.
