Gears 5 is due out in a couple of weeks and as the game goes, it will have a heavy emphasis on the multiplayer aspect of the game. The Coalition, the makers of the upcoming shooter believe they are “ahead of the industry” by not including loot boxes in the game however, the game still has microtransactions.

The Coalition’s Ryan Cleven responded to a question at Gamescom on whether or not the game will include microtransactions. Ryan confirmed the game will have no loot boxes but does indeed have a store where players can spend real money on in-game currency such as Iron which is used to purchase cosmetics.

Mostly everything in Gears 5 can be unlocked through various in-game activities. The customization system called Tour of Duty is where players can unlock customization items and Supply is where players can get free content for playing the game.

The two pools of items are separate and if you want to unlock items from Tour of Duty, you will need to fork out cash for them or grind in-game. Speaking to, Ryan claims the system is  “very player-centric”.

We really think we’re ahead of the industry here in getting rid of loot boxes and making sure that we can both service people that are looking to accelerate their progression or earn cosmetics using money but also keeping the integrity of the game experience,”

Even though the game has a heavy emphasis on in-game purchases, it does not impact the progression (duh). Still, having loot boxes is one thing and having a shameless in-game store selling items for real money is kind of the same thing.

In a nutshell, even though Gears 5 does not have loot boxes, expect the game to be littered with in-game purchases. Welcome to 2019. Gears 5 releases on 6 September 2019 for Xbox Ultimate Members and 10 September 2019 for everyone else on Xbox One and PC. Make sure to check out the Gears 5 system requirements here.
