Ghost of Yotei Franchise One Movie Spin-Offs Sucker Punch

Ghost of Yotei Begins a Franchise With ‘One Movie and Other Spin-Offs’ Planned

Sucker Punch Productions recently announced the follow-up to Ghost of Tsushima titled Ghost of Yotei. While it isn’t technically a direct sequel as it’s set hundreds of years after the first game with a new protagonist and story, the developer says that it marks the beginning of a franchise with ‘at least one movie and other spin-offs’ planned for the future.

Speaking to New York Times in a recent interview, Ghost of Yotei creative directors Nate Fox and Jason Connell confirmed that the Ghost of Tsushima follow-up marks the start of a potential franchise for Sucker Punch Productions with plans to expand the universe beyond the realm of video games. This includes at least one movie, which we know is in development at Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions, helmed by John Wick director Chad Stahelski.

Fox and Connell also mentioned ‘other spin-offs’ which suggests there are other stories to be told in this new universe being established, though we’ll have to wait a little longer for that.

Elsewhere in the interview, the creative duo also talked about the process of bringing feudal Japan to life – Sucker Punch’s team visitied the real-world locations in the country including Mount Yotei to accurately capture the beauty and nature of the setting. Fox stated:

“When we started working on a sequel, the first question we asked ourselves is ‘what is the DNA of a Ghost game?’ It’s about transporting the player to the romance and beauty of feudal Japan.”

The team also visited Shiretoko National Park on the northeastern tip of Hokkaido to record sounds:

“Inside the park, you have to watch a video telling you about the dangers of bears. Being in this incredibly beautiful park with jagged cliffs and water, yet all the time being aware there were dangerous bears, was electrifying. We strive to bring that into the video game – that feeling of danger.”

Ghost of Yotei releases in 2025 exclusively for PS5.
