Developer Tango Gameworks is in the spotlight this week thanks to the release of Ghostwire: Tokyo tomorrow. However, the studio founder and legendary game director Shinji Mikami envisions more ambitious ideas for the company outside of the horror genre.
In an interview with Japanese magazine Famitsu, Mikami spoke about his experiences with Tango Gameworks and the specific genre that they focus on, being horror. The studio has developed both Ghostwire: Tokyo and The Evil Within games which are largely based on horror, but Mikami wants them to be known for more than that.
Mikami expressed interest in shifting Tango Gameworks to make more games outside of the horror genre, stating:
“I hope to eventually change the image that Tango Gameworks currently has. At the moment, we are still seen as a studio that specialises only in survival horror.
Of course, it’s nice to have fans think of us as a studio with a reputation for developing survival horror games. But we also want to be viewed as a studio that can create a wider variety of games. We will be releasing more and more new games in the future, starting with Ghostwire: Tokyo, so please give us your support.”
Mikami also stated that they want to make smaller-scaled games compared to their usual AAA outings.
Additionally, he revealed that The Evil Within 2 director John Johanas was working on a new project that’s not a horror game, but stopped shy of offering any details about it:
“John Johanas, who directed the DLC for The Evil Within and The Evil Within 2, is working on a completely new title that is the complete opposite of horror. It’s a really good game, so keep your eyes peeled.”
Finally, Mikami stressed that he doesn’t consider Ghostwire: Tokyo to be a horror game, instead calling it an arcade-style action-adventure game. However, it does contain plenty of horror elements, but it’s never at the forefront of the experience like The Evil Within.
