God of War Gets PS5 Performance Patch Today

Those of you with a PS5 who want to go back and play one of the greatest games of the last generation can now do so and enjoy a performance boost at the same time. This comes in the form of a new game update that will boost the frame rate and increase the resolution for the console.

Keep in mind that this new update is not technically a PS5 enhancement which means the game will still be a PS4 experience on the console. However, thanks to the PS5 backwards compatibility, this allows Santa Monica Studios the opportunity to improve the PS4 version of God of War which is automatically boosted on the PlayStation 5.

According to the blog post, the development team have been working on a video graphics mode option that will enable the PS5 to get the most out of the increased performance capabilities of the hardware.

On the PS4 Pro version of God of War, players have a choice between two graphics modes: a performance and resolution. The new update coming to God of War will replace the current graphics modes with a new default setting that offers the best performance and resolution for the PS5. This includes:

God of War PS5 Enhancements

  • Syncs to 60 FPS
  • 4K Checkerboard Resolution
  • 2160p

Players can also go back to the original PlayStation 4 graphics mode if they want to.

Many of you are probably wondering why the PS5, with all its power, is rendering the game at checkboard 4K. That is because, in order to get the game at native 4K, Santa Monica Studios would have to completely rewrite the game’s performance code at its core. It is easier to tweak the current PS4 version of the game, which runs at checkerboard already, to automatically get a boosted experience on the PS5.

The update will be live sometime today.
