Developer Santa Monica Studio has announced that God of War Ragnarok managed to sell 11 million copies in 3 months, making it the fastest-selling first-party game in PlayStation history at launch. The sequel is potentially on track to outsell its predecessor as well in the coming year.
“We’re incredibly humbled that God of War Ragnarök has officially sold through 11 million copies,” said Santa Monica Studio in a recent statement. “None of this would be possible without the support of our fans, so thank you for coming on this journey with us!”

God of War Ragnarok managed to sell over 5 million copies in its debut week alone, which is a huge achievement for a PlayStation exclusive. Its predecessor, 2018’s God of War, has accumulated around 23 million copies sold though it’s generally believed that Ragnarok will match or outsell it at some point if these sales continue to grow.
God of War Ragnarok launched in November 2022 to largely positive reviews with many outlets calling it one of the best PlayStation exclusives of all time. The game’s combat, story, writing, characters and visuals were all praised as top-tier in the AAA gaming space. It went on to be nominated for Game of the Year at 2022’s The Game Awards but was edged out by From Software’s Elden Ring.
Sony’s description of God of War Ragnarok reads:
“Fimbulwinter is well underway. Kratos and Atreus must journey to each of the Nine Realms in search of answers as Asgardian forces prepare for a prophesied battle that will end the world. Along the way they will explore stunning, mythical landscapes, and face fearsome enemies in the form of Norse gods and monsters. The threat of Ragnarök grows ever closer. Kratos and Atreus must choose between their own safety and the safety of the realms.”
God of War Ragnarok is currently available for PS4 and PS5.
