God of War Ragnarok is out now for PS5 and PS4 but if you’re playing on PS5 you’ll be able to take advantage of some cool High Frame Rate modes in the game. It is important to note that the HFR mode in God of War Ragnarok requires an HDMI 2.1 compatible display. Meaning your TV or monitor needs to have 120Hz support in order to use the graphics modes. We’ve seen a lot of questions online regarding how to turn on High Frame Rate mode in God of War Ragnarok so here’s a simple guide on how it all works.
What is High Frame Rate Mode in God of War Ragnarok?
Simply speaking, the HFR mode in God of War Ragnarok lets your TV or monitor run at a frame rate in-between 30FPS and 60FPS. That middle ground is 40FPS. You see, standard monitors and TV are only designed to run at set FPS modes. A 60Hz monitor can only run at either 60Hz or 30Hz and when a game can’t meet that 60Hz cap, it results in jittering due to the monitor rapidly alternating between 30fps and 60fps.
120Hz TVs don’t have this issue because the 40FPS mark allows it to drop to 30FPS at times and the drop isn’t as drastic as say 60 to 30. The 40FPS mode is also less taxing compared to running the game at 60FPS so games can reach higher resolutions and keep all the other fancy visuals intact at the same time. It all results in a smoother, higher-resolution experience in games.
How to Enable High Frame Rate More in God of War Ragnarok
Enabling High Frame Rate Mode in God of War Ragnarok is simple. You first need to make sure you have a compatible display. An easy way to tell this is by heading to Settings on your PS5 and checking to see if 120Hz mode is available. If you can’t turn this on, you sadly don’t have a supported display.
If you can turn it on, enable it. Then follow the below instructions to get God of War working in HFR mode.
- Start God of War Ragnarok
- At the main menu select Settings
- Click Graphics & Camera
- Venture to Graphics Mode
- Choose between either Favor Quality or Favor Performance HFR Modes
The different graphics modes do different things so fiddle around with them until you’re happy. I preferred to use Favour Quality HFR. Other modes include:
- Favour performance (1140 – 2160p/60 FPS Target)
- Favour performance + HFR (1440 P/Unlocked 60 FPS)
- Favour performance + HFR + VRR (1440P/Unlocked 60 FPS)
- Favour quality (2160p [native 4k]/ 30 FPS target)
- Favour quality (1800 – 2160p/40 FPS target)
- Favour quality + HFR + VRR (1800 – 2160p/40 FPS unlocked)
