God of War Ragnarok is The Fastest-Selling PlayStation Exclusive Ever

God of War Ragnarok has officially become Sony’s fastest-selling PlayStation exclusive of all time. Developer Santa Monica Studio made the exciting announcement recently, revealing that the sequel has managed to sell a whopping 5.1 million copies in its first week across PS4 and PS5, surpassing the previous record holder The Last of Us Part II by over a million units sold.

God of War Ragnarok has been built up since the ending of 2018’s God of War, teasing the arrival of Fimbulwinter and Kratos clashing with the mighty god of thunder, Thor. It once again follows the Spartan and his son Atreus as they go on a journey to prevent the imminent disaster of Ragnarok, enlisting the help of friends (and foes) along the way. Atreus is also trying to figure out his true heritage as a demigod and his place among the world.

Santa Monica Studio took to social media to announce that God of War Ragnarok had sold 5.1 million copies in its first week. In comparison, The Last of Us Part II sold 4 million copies in that same time frame. In third place, Marvel’s Spider-Man managed to sell 3.3 million copies in its debut week, with 2018’s God of War trailing in fourth place with 3.1 million copies. Ghost of Tsushima lands in fifth place as it sold 2.4 million copies in its first week.

The official PlayStation page for God of War Ragnarok provides a description:

“From Santa Monica Studio comes the sequel to the critically acclaimed God of War (2018). Fimbulwinter is well underway. Kratos and Atreus must journey to each of the Nine Realms in search of answers as Asgardian forces prepare for a prophesied battle that will end the world. Along the way they will explore stunning, mythical landscapes, and face fearsome enemies in the form of Norse gods and monsters. The threat of Ragnarök grows ever closer. Kratos and Atreus must choose between their own safety and the safety of the realms.”

God of War Ragnarok is now available for PS4 and PS5.
