God of War Ragnarok Marks Biggest Week For PS5 Beating Modern Warfare 2’s Launch

God of War Ragnarok launched last week Wednesday and it not only marked the release of one of the biggest games of the year but it also surpassed Modern Warfare 2 and Elden Ring when it came to physical sales. The game has sold more copies than Elden Ring and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. It has even surpassed Pokemon Legends: Arceus.

According to GfK, these sales are mainly made up of boxed copies so there’s a good chance that Modern Warfare 2 is still the king of overall sales. The game is mainly a downloaded title anyway. Still, the God of War Ragnarok sales are quite impressive and Sony has also shown off the PS5’s popularity at the same time. According to the numbers, 82% of all God of War Ragnarok sales were on PS5 while only 18% accounted for PS4 sales.

God of War Ragnarok has also sold more copies in its first week than any previous game in the series. It has sold 51% more units in the first week than the 2018 game and is currently the third-best-selling God of War title (for now of course).

Sony has also managed to sell quite a number of PS5 consoles alongside the launch of the new game. 12% of all God of War Ragnarok sales came from the new PS5 console bundle that included a copy of the game. This bundle accounted for 60% of all PS5 consoles sold during that week. GfK says the God of War Ragnarok launch marked the biggest week for PS5 sales this year.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has sadly slipped to No.2 on the charts after seeing a 39% decline in sales. Sonic Frontiers also debuted at No.4. Given the uptake on PS5 hardware, Horizon Forbidden West also returned to the top 10 at No.7. The game saw a 141% increase in sales compared to the previous week.
