Last week, developer Santa Monica Studio announced that God of War Ragnarok would be receiving free DLC in the form of Valhalla, a new roguelike mode that pits Kratos and Mimir against a variety of challenging fights. However, fans initially believed that the DLC wouldn’t contain any story elements but the studio has come out to clarify that it does contain a story and serves as an epilogue to the events of Ragnarok.
God of War Ragnarok‘s Valhalla DLC is expected to release today, though it might offer a bit more than fans were expecting. Speaking on X (formerly Twitter), Santa Monica Studio responded to a fan asking if Valhalla would feature any story. “There is story!” said the studio. “GoWR:V serves as an epilogue to the events of God of War Ragnarok.”

A previous PlayStation Blog post gives us a better idea of what to expect in the new DLC:
“God of War Ragnarok: Valhalla will be an epilogue to the events of God of War Ragnarok that follows Kratos on a deeply personal and reflective journey. Set after the decisive battle against Odin and Atreus’ departure, Kratos has seen a path for himself that he never thought possible before. Brought to the mysterious shores of Valhalla accompanied only by Mimir, Kratos will enter its unknown depths to overcome trials within himself and face echoes of his past.”
The “face echoes of his past” bit is interesting as fans noticed a certain familiar musical cue play in the reveal trailer – specifically the theme song that accompanied the Greek mythology saga of God of War. The trailer ends with a shot of a cyclops from Greek mythology, so we’ll definitely be getting a taste of the older games in some shape or form.

Fans also speculate that Valhalla will potentially tease the next God of War game, which is rumoured to be based in Egyptian mythology (according to theories surrounding a curious in-game item).
God of War Ragnarok is available for PS4 and PS5. The Valhalla DLC arrives today.
