Last week, we reported on the news that Amazon was rebooting the God of War TV series following staff departures from showrunner Rafe Judkins and executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus. A new showrunner has finally been found in Ronald D. Moore, who previously worked on the critically acclaimed 2000s reboot of Battlestar Galactica and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
As reported by Deadline, Ronald D. Moore will lead the charge on the God of War TV series at Amazon as the new showrunner. His previous work includes Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Moore will apparently serve as the show’s writer, executive producer and showrunner. Prior to the departure of Judkins, Ostby and Fergus, the trio had written multiple scripts of the first season. It’s unclear how much of those stories Moore will keep in the series.
Moore will join the God of War series as part of a multi-year deal with Sony. Santa Monica Studio creative director Cory Barlog will remain onboard as an executive producer, hopefully being able to steer the ship on creative decisions.
Not much is currently known about the God of War show other than it will be based on the Norse saga of games beginning with the 2018 title and concluding with God of War: Ragnarok. Some fans have questioned this decision as Kratos’ story actually begins with the Greek saga of games, though given the emotionally-driven centrepiece of the Norse saga – that being the relationship between Kratos and his son, Atreus – it arguably makes for more compelling storytelling and television.
Amazon is banking on the God of War show to trade blows with HBO’s critically acclaimed The Last of Us adaptation, which is currently scheduled to air its second season sometime in 2025. Given the fantasy nature of the setting, it’s likely that the God of War series will need a sizeable budget. Thankfully, Amazon seems to have plenty of that.
