God of War TV Series Will be ‘Incredibly True to Source Material’

Amazon has assured fans that its upcoming TV series adaptation of God of War will be ‘incredibly true to the source material.’ The company recently announced that it planned to adapt Sony Interactive Entertainment’s major IP into a big-budget television series similar to what HBO and PlayStation Productions are currently producing with The Last of Us.

The television adaptation for The Last of Us appears to be sticking very closely to the source material and it seems like Amazon wants to follow in its footsteps. The God of War series will adapt the Norse saga of the franchise – a move that makes sense as that particular saga is more story-heavy and emotionally driven than the violent rampage of the Greek saga. It would translate far better to the television format.

In an interview with Collider, Amazon Studios’ head of television Vernon Sanders talked about remaining faithful to the God of War source material:

“We do incredibly well with adaptations, from Invincible to The Boys. I mean, we just covered so many of them, right? And so, we know that there’s such a passionate fan base for God of War. But the thing that we’re always looking for is whether there is a real emotional core, if there’s a real narrative story, and I think [that’s] part of what makes God of War so special.”

Sanders continued by stating that the TV show’s creative team, under the supervision of Santa Monica Studio head Yumi Yang and creative director Cory Barlog, are aiming to make something that both fans and newcomers can enjoy:

“At the center of it all is this story of fathers and sons, and families, set against this giant epic landscape. So what Rafe and Mark and Hawk have come up with for the first season, and for the series, I think, is both incredibly true to the source material, and also compelling on its own. If you never played the game, you will fall in love with the show and feel very much invited in. So, we think it’s going to be huge.”

The God of War TV series is currently in production at Amazon.
